What is value investing? Why should you care?

Essentially, understanding what humans and societies find valuable, and exploiting that knowledge in the form of opportunities, when there seem to be differences between how valuable a thing is, and how the markets are valuing it.

In long-term investing, this usually translates to finding opportunities with high growth potential and a possibility to provide enough value to society, that an increase in market valuation can be expected in the long term when that potential starts materializing.
It means calling bullshit in dogmas and realities assumed by the market or taking steps to prepare for a crisis that might affect us before they are materialized in the market valuation.

Essentially, it's investing in those things we think are useful enough for humans, as a realist, to affect positively their valuation in our favor. It's a passionate branch of financial analysis that forces the investor to ask himself sometimes philosophical questions like: "What is truly valuable for a person? Why? why is there a difference between this hypothesis and the current market valuation?".

In my opinion, this is the best skill, a businessman can have. And a data-driven one has a high advantage to master it. I'm going to try to teach you everything I know about this super complex concept, in this course.

Chapter details

  • Chapter0: Investment philosophy and mental framework

What is value? Why do humans pay for some things, and not for other? What motivates us? What is a good investor? This first chapter is my favorite, there is no such thing as "investing" without a clear purpose of why we would try to do such a thing. This chapter dives deep into the mental framework a value investor needs to have, based on the Bogglehead handbook, my favorite investors tips (Buffet, Burry), mixed with a little bit of my secret sauce: pessimistic real politic and my data-driven business strategy knowledge, nurtured by my own investing experience. We will talk about biology, history, and sociology to be able to have a clear picture of what value is,and what should we try to do to make it work in our favor.

FAQ

  • Do I need to know how to code?

Nope, no high-tech here. This is a business course with a little bit of math, just enough to help you start long-term investing.

  • Do I need any previous knowledge on tech or data?

Nope, I'm going to teach you all you need, from scratch.

  • Will you teach trading strategies?

Nope as it is usually taught. People that talk about trading usually refer to short-term or even day trading. Buying a stock and selling it in 12 years can be considered trading and that's what I teach here, for example. But if you think trading as short-term, I don't do trading.
